  6.  In addition to their problems with Christmas, the Aussies
  7. face a second Holiday Crisis every year, again caused by
  8. the fact that for them the planet is upside-down and all
  9. the good holidays are on the other side.  I refer, of
  10. course, to good ol' American Independence Day, which
  11. occurs in Australia during the dead of winter! They
  12. could of course move it two seasons into January, but the
  13. real reason for any Aussie having another holiday anyway
  14. is to have an excuse to drink more beer, and on JANUARY 4th
  15. everybody is still hung over from the previous New Year's
  16. Eve parties!  And after all, how can you have fried-chicken
  17. pot-luck picnics immediately after consuming all that
  18. hoppin-john and them collards?  It's a point of argument
  19. whether Australia should celebrate an American holiday
  20. anyway, but the resourceful Australians have solved the
  21. problem in their own creative way, choosing to honor the
  22. day a few shiploads of convicts arrived to found the city
  23. of Sydney back on January 26, 1788.  This observance of
  24. "Australia Day" not only has the advantage of being in the
  25. summer, which is better for picnics, but also coincides
  26. with Super Bowl Weekend, which gives them something better
  27. to watch after the lamb stew than your average ABC News
  28. telecast of fireworks over Miami.  So don't delay, pack
  29. your bags and catch the late freighter to Sydney; and
  30. don't forget to send us a Christmas card next July 4th...
